Introduction
There are certain conversations I hope we will have throughout your lives.
Some will happen around the dinner table. Some while we're driving somewhere together. Others may take place over a quiet cup of tea many years from now. But I also know that life has a way of moving quickly. Children grow up. Parents grow older. The ordinary moments we assume will always be there eventually become memories.
That is why I wrote this book.
These are the conversations I never want us to lose.
Over the years, life has been my greatest teacher. Not because it has always been kind, but because it has always been honest. Some lessons arrived quietly through everyday moments. Others arrived through disappointment, grief, failure, and unexpected change. Looking back, I've come to realise that wisdom rarely appears in dramatic flashes. More often, it reveals itself in ordinary moments that only become meaningful once we've taken the time to reflect on them.
This book is a collection of those reflections.
Each chapter begins as a letter to the two of you, but my hope is that these words will resonate with anyone who has ever questioned who they are becoming, struggled through difficult seasons, or searched for a more intentional way to live.
These essays are not meant to provide perfect answers. Life rarely offers those. Instead, they are invitations—to pause, to think deeply, to question the stories we inherit, and to choose our own path with courage and wisdom.
If there is one thing I hope you remember after reading this book, it is this:
A meaningful life is rarely built through extraordinary moments alone.
It is built through ordinary choices.
Through how we treat people.
Through the habits we cultivate.
Through the boundaries we keep.
Through the courage to let go of what no longer serves us.
Through the willingness to begin again.
Wisdom is not something reserved for the old or the accomplished. It is something we gather, one ordinary day at a time.
These letters are simply my attempt to pass some of that wisdom on to you.
With all my love,
Mom
Chapter 1
The Wisdom of Ordinary Things
Dear L&B,
When we are young, we often believe that wisdom arrives in dramatic moments.
We imagine it comes through extraordinary adventures, remarkable achievements, or life-changing experiences. We wait for the perfect mentor, the perfect book, or the perfect opportunity to reveal life's greatest secrets.
But the older I become, the more I realise that wisdom rarely announces itself with fanfare.
Instead, it whispers.
It hides inside ordinary conversations, everyday routines, quiet disappointments, and seemingly insignificant moments that most people overlook.
The greatest lessons I have ever learned didn't arrive while standing on mountain peaks.
They came while folding laundry.
While washing dishes.
While sitting alone with a cup of tea after a difficult day.
While watching the rain against the window.
Life, I've discovered, is an extraordinary teacher disguised as an ordinary one.
The challenge is that most of us are moving too quickly to notice.
We spend our lives chasing milestones, believing happiness exists somewhere in the future. We tell ourselves that once we graduate... once we get married... once we earn more money... once we buy a house... once life settles down... then we'll finally begin living.
But life isn't waiting for us somewhere else.
It's happening now.
In the ordinary Tuesday afternoons.
In the conversations around the dinner table.
In the walk home after work.
In the laughter that interrupts an otherwise ordinary day.
One of the greatest mistakes we can make is assuming that ordinary moments are insignificant simply because they happen every day.
In reality, our lives are built almost entirely from ordinary moments.
The extraordinary is simply the accumulation of many ordinary days lived with intention.
That is why this book exists.
Not to teach you how to become extraordinary.
But to help you notice the extraordinary wisdom already hidden inside ordinary life.
