About the Book

From the Kampong to the Ivory Tower and Community Service (At the Crossroads: Roots of Resilience) In a world before affluence, resilience was not a concept to be studied but a practice to be lived. From the communal chatter of a vanished kampong to the rigours of National Service and community activism, At the Crossroads: Roots of Resilience is a poignant pilgrimage into the heart of early Singapore. Scholar and advocate Hussin Mutalib, Ph.D., traces an extraordinary journey across the four defining stations of his life: the high-pressure broadcasting rooms of Radio Television Singapore, the global reach of Singapore Airlines, the distant campus experiences of Australia, and his eventual ‘homecoming’ as a mentor and professor at the National University of Singapore. This narrative is grounded in a lifetime of dedicated scholarship and public service, from helping to shape national policies on government committees to producing a vast body of academic research that deconstructs the nation-building complexities of a modernising state. More than a mere record of a life, this memoir explores the intersection of professional aspiration and community duty. It chronicles a lifetime of activism within the Malay/Muslim community—recounting the ‘battles fought and won’ to unlock potential opportunities and address systemic challenges through tireless advocacy and public commentary. Guided by a vision of Islam rooted in justice and compassion, and a forthright and fearless demeanour, this is also a ‘letter to the future’. It is a call for the next generation to take the baton of resilience and faith, and to run a race that is braver, kinder, and more inclusive than the one before.

About the Author

Hussin Mutalib, Ph.D., is a senior academic and dedicated scholar-activist whose life’s work has been defined by bridging the gap between the ‘ivory tower’ and community service. A former lecturer-mentor at the National University of Singapore for 35 years and an activist on various national and community committees, he has spent decades deconstructing nation-building complexities while championing the upliftment of the Malay/Muslim community through principled advocacy. His journey from the modest kampongs of early Singapore to the global halls of scholarship serves as a testament to the resilience and faith required to navigate the crossroads of a modernising state.
