About the Author

Charles Sampson Edgar is a seasoned safety leader and executive coach with over 25 years of experience across the global energy sector, spanning upstream, midstream, and downstream operations in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. He specializes in strengthening safety culture and building resilient, high-performing teams by blending deep technical expertise with a people-centered, coaching-driven approach.

An advocate for coaching-based leadership, Charles is the founder of The Safety Edge Platform, an independent leadership and safety learning initiative and home of The Safety Edge Podcast. Through this platform, he supports safety leaders, executives, and frontline supervisors in moving beyond directive management toward cultures grounded in trust, ownership, and empowerment.

As an ICF-credentialed Associate Certified Coach (ACC), he specializes in executive leadership development and organizational transformation, supported by globally recognized safety credentials including Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), and Certified Functional Safety Professional (CFSP).

His expertise is grounded in both extensive field experience and rigorous academic study. Charles holds an Executive MBA, an MSc in Asset Integrity Management (AIM), and has completed executive leadership programs at Stanford Graduate School of Business, MIT Sloan School of Management, Oxford Saïd Business School, Rotman School of Management, and other leading global institutions. He is currently undertaking a Doctorate in Global Business Leadership at IPAG Business School, France, researching the intersection of coaching, culture, and safety performance.

A committed lifelong learner, Charles maintains active membership in several professional bodies, including the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), Energy Institute (EI), International Coaching Federation (ICF), and Health and Safety Professionals of Canada (HSPC).
